Italian food needs little introduction - it's become increasingly popular over the past few years with chefs like Antonio Carlucci bringing it's popularity into our kitchens.
Whether it's pasta, pizza, tiramisu, biscotti or Chianti, a typical Italian wine, we've all enjoyed traditional food and drink from Italy.
The food and customs of Italy are celebrated as Italians are reputed to love their food and relish sharing their culinary expertise. If you're visiting Italy, you'll probably eat your lunch or dinner in either a trattoria or a ristorante
Foods like bread and cheese still form the backbone of the diet and fresh cheeses and salami are carefully chosen and bought from street markets
The southern Italian diet has an emphasis on olive oil, fresh and plentiful fruit, vegetables and fish, is reputed to be one of the healthiest in Europe and typifies the Mediterranean diet.
If visiting Italy, you'll find that regional food varies and each meal is a veritable feast - whereas you may be used to just three courses, be prepared to cope with seven or more in a typical meal. You'll start with antipasto, warm up with il primo, move on to il secondo, not forgetting your salad (contorni), followed by your choice of fruit or dessert.
Italian dishes can be quite straight forward to prepare, which may account for the rise in popularity. It's also possible to buy some of the specialities of Italy in larger supermarkets and stores.
