Visitors to Brazil discover a stunning array of fresh fruit and cheap food.
There are quite large difference in cuisine between regions - from the interior to the Rio Grande.
Meat and fish consumers will enjoy Brazilian grilled meat and seafood dishes. Despite sharp regional differences, however, across Brazil there is one constant: the obvious joy taken in food, and in eating.
If there is one main dish that typifies Brazilian cooking, it is Feijoada. This is a complicated bean and meat dish topped with a manioc flour sauce. The African heritage in Brazilian food goes beyond feijoada, but it is, without doubt, Africans' most significant contribution to the local cuisine. This is such a popular dish, that it's eaten at weekends and in restaurants.
Bay leaf, parsley, thyme and black pepper, which mainstream Americans commonly use, are predominant flavorings in Brazilian cooking. One of the basic ingredients in Bahian or Afro-Brazilian cuisine, it adds a wonderful flavor and bright orange color to foods. This style of food owes its origins to the centuries-old campfire roasts of the gauchos from the Pampa region of southern Brazil. Today Churrasco is very popular in Brazil and restaurants featuring this style of cooking have spread throughout the world.
A typical meal may consist of a meat dish, served with rice, beans or salad.
You'll find both familiar fruits in Brazil, such as mango, and new fruits that you can only find and taste here.
